21st century for ourselves ~ what we can do now ~
Since the beginning of mankind until this time, humanity had wandered towards peace through many conflicts. The world meeting the 21st centaury is still a world looking for the right way and peace. Society in the 21st centaury has been influenced by globalism and it has benefits on the economical and social sides. It is true that through globalization the world is becoming one but on the other hand countries face different problems that arise resulting to differences in interpretation of the new situation. In this century we should not be thinking of receiving benefits only. On this 50th anniversary, we should choose some of the problems that are close to us and come up with solutions. In this conference we need to find the first step on the road to peace and make the 21st century a better one.
Many people have debated the new problems came up in different places due to globalization and the new information society. We students, have to use this conference of students from different countries in order to find what we as students must accomplish in this society. For example, Japan as a developed country, can not perceive the expanding economic gap between developing and developed countries and the gap between rich and poor. Even though we live on the same planet, each country tackles environment issues differently. The attitude toward labor and education is different too and we need to re-think these issues with making things better in mind. We must think that while the world becomes one under globalization, in some countries original culture will disappear. Thus, the information age, which looks to glittering at first glimpse, has a lot of problems hiding in the background.
The reality is that there are different problems in different countries and the complicated linkage between advantages and disadvantages, differences in cultures etc., and there are many barriers on the way to solution. In the 21st century we should aim for what students can do in order to solve these problems without considering advantages and disadvantages, differences in cultures. We shouldn’t be looking at the situation and problems in neighboring countries only from our country’s point of view but make sure we understand them correctly. We should also make sure that we also understand other nations’ point of view. So far students from different countries have addressed these issues from various angles and were able to find solutions and a new direction for solving the problems that hide behind the globalization of our society. Now, we students understand what we must do now.
Many people wish that 21century will be ‘peace century’, but we have many problems and seek solutions. We must have solidarity with other nations around the globe in order to open We must transcend borders, countries, culture differences, deepen the mutual understanding and this international student conference will be the first step toward “The Road to Peace”.
